Modafinil: How to Pick the Right Dosage And Avoid Tolerance
By now you might have noticed that we are strong proponents of Modafinil here at Red Pill Reviews and for good reason too. It has helped us become more productive and efficient. If you are new here or haven’t heard about Modafinil, I recommend that you take a minute and go check out the articles we’ve written so far about the subject. The Beginners Guide to Modafinil and our review of the different Modafinil vendors are good places to start.
Now the previous articles I have written about Modafinil were long and in depth but there are some things that I had to leave out that I would like to talk about more here. Those two things are Dosage and Tolerance.
Finding the Right Dosage
Now since we are circumventing a doctor providing a prescription for Modafinil and buying it from the internet we don’t have the benefit of getting personal information tailored from our Doctor. This includes dosage. I am by no means a doctor and am not qualified to give you medical advice. I can, however, provide suggestions that arm you with the information you need to choose the right dosage in order to use this drug properly.
Modafinil vs Armodafinil
The reason I want go more in depth with dosing is that it really can make or break your experience with the drug and since the drug will stay in your system most of the day you want to make sure that you get a dosage at the right level so you get the desired effects without going too far.
Now the dosage is not black and white like you may think. For example, the first difference I want to talk about is the difference between Armodafinil and Modafinil. As I have previously covered in my comparison of the two versions of Modafinil, Armodafinil is the stronger version of the two and requires a different does than Modafinil does.
Each pill of Modafinil, whether it be Modalert or Modvigil, contains 200mg of Modafinil.
Armodafinil on the other hand, whether it be Waklert or Artvigil, is always 150mg of Modafinil.
So when you are trying to figure out how much to take make sure you know the difference between the version of Modafinil you have.
Dosage and Side Effects
The other reason dosage is so important is that there can be some serious side effects if taken improperly. If you recall from my earlier Modafinil article the side effects are pretty unpleasant. They include:
- Loss of appetite
- Passing out
This is why it is important to start low when dosing Modafinil or Armodafinil. There are three different categories of reactions people might have to this drug. You could either be:
- Standard responder – The drug works as described
- Non Responder – The drug does nothing
- Sensitive Responder – The drug has stronger effects at a normal dose.
Choosing the Right Dosage
I recommend starting at with a quarter of a pill for both Modafinil and Armodafinil. This is the safest way to go about things without risking the side effects found above. With Modafinil this is equivalent to about 50mg and with Armodafinil this is equivalent to around 37.5mg.
Take this and if you don’t seen the effects you want you can move up to half a pill.
Again, if you are not seeing the effects at half of a pill you can move up to three quarters of a pill.
Finally if you really need it you can move up to a full pill.
By starting small you can gauge your reaction to the drug and not get overwhelmed by negative side effects.
I am personally fine with a quarter or a half of the pill and do not need any more. I don’t recommend moving beyond a full pill.
There are people that need to take 400mg+ a day to have any effect and that is crazy to me. That is borderline too much and dangerous considering we don’t know much about the effects at such high doses. That brings me to the next topic though which is tolerance.
Can you Build up a Tolerance to Modafinil?
Although Modafinil is relatively new and there isn’t a wide range of research that has been conducted it is pretty clear that it is possible for a tolerance to develop when using Modafinil. Like anything that sounds too good to be true, there is always a catch. With Modafinil long term usage to can result in burnout and possibly buildup of a tolerance.
The difference with Modafinil is that it does not have a high addictive potential like other stimulants such as Adderall or other amphetamines. Though since it is a dopaminergic compound by nature there will be negative consequences after consistent repeated use.
Modafinil upregulates certain neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine after a certain point of repeated usage this won’t have as much of an effect as when you first started taking Modafinil. However there are very few studies on this and from personal experience plus other’s experience I can say with certainty that it takes a very long time for any signs of tolerance to appear.
This doesn’t mean you can go crazy with it! The real danger comes from burnout. Since Modafinil has a long half-life at around 15 hours it is very likely that there is still Modafinil in your blood stream at the end of the day when you go to sleep. Studies show that Modafinil, like any other stimulant, can negatively affect your sleep. Coupled with taking Modafinil daily this can lead to burnout as you are not giving your body enough time to recover.
Tips to Take Modafinil Safely
This is relatively simple and I highly recommend that if you decide to take Modafinil that you take into account the following guidelines to be safe and prevent any unwanted side effects.
The best way to manage your schedule and prevent burnout is obviously frequency. There is no good reason that you should be taking Modafinil every single day of the week if you are taking it as a nootropic. Doing this is just asking for problems. I recommend sticking to twice a week and at most three times a week. Doing so will ensure that Modafinil doesn’t become a crutch and impede normal cognitive function.
The other way is by dosage. As I mentioned before the first couple times you take Modafinil you should experiment with the dosage to find what works for you. It is important that you stick to the lowest possible dosage that still gives you the desired effects. By sticking with a smaller dosage you are lowering the chances of developing a tolerance and also there will be less in your bloodstream at the end of the day. If you notice that you need higher doses to achieve the same effects it might be time to take a break and let your body recover.
I hope this article has given you some more insight into the wonderful and often at times scary world of nootropics. I believe it is important to be well informed before taking nootropics and by following this information and the information from our other guides you should be all set to go conquer the world with Modafinil. Just don’t go crazy!
Until next time,
